Why ARAM: Mayhem Took Off—and How Many Players Regular ARAM Still Has

ARAM: Mayhem lends itself to a short video: show viewers the augment choice, invite them to guess how outrageous the combination might become, then deliver the payoff in a team fight. Even without seeing the previous ten minutes, they can quickly share that little moment of anticipation.

This explains its fit with livestreaming better than “more champions and higher damage.” The game keeps supplying streamers with new questions and viewers with new things to watch. But seeing a mode frequently on streams and knowing how many players it has are two separate questions.

A match becomes a series of choices waiting to pay off

Regular ARAM does not follow a single fixed script. Different champions, compositions, and opponents change positioning, item builds, and the way team fights unfold. Much of its pleasure comes from execution within familiar rules: how do you play this next fight well on a narrow map?

Mayhem adds augment choices to that foundation, turning what a champion can do into another variable within the match. After receiving one augment, players look for the next piece of the puzzle. An otherwise ordinary ability can gain a new use through a particular combination. The anticipation is no longer only about winning; it is also about whether a provisional idea will take shape.

This process serves players and viewers at the same time. Players weigh immediate strength against a future combination. Viewers can suggest options, predict outcomes, and wait for the next augment. Even without an exceptional mechanical play, a streamer can build a complete segment around a decision.

Moment in the match

What the player is doing

What it adds to a stream

Augment choices appear

Comparing immediate benefits with combination potential

Viewers can join the choice and disagree

The combination is still incomplete

Looking for items or later augments

The next missing piece gives viewers a reason to keep watching

The first test in combat

Finding out whether the idea works

The outcome can become a clear, self-contained clip

An unexpected success or failure

Adjusting play and accepting a random outcome

Surprise, miscalculation, and reversals

This is an explanation of watchability, not a causal measurement of livestream growth. The number of streamers, recommendation systems, event exposure, and the existing player base also affect popularity. Seeing a great deal of related content on Douyin may be the experience of this loop being amplified; it does not tell us what proportion each factor contributes.

Randomness can exhaust the fun, too

More combinations do not guarantee a more interesting match. If a few builds are much stronger than the alternatives, players soon move from discovering new ways to play to waiting for the same few answers. Those who miss them feel the match is already lost; those who get them simply reproduce a guide. The process is formally random, but everyone’s target becomes increasingly similar.

Another problem arises when the system overshadows the champion. A player gets a familiar character, yet the outcome depends mainly on an extra mechanic, making the champion’s own abilities and the feedback from using them less important. The numbers look spectacular while the champions feel more alike.

Riot discussed this tension in its May 2026 developer update and planned to remove Traits in patch 26.12: the system encouraged similar choices and obscured the champions’ own identities. At the same time, development continued toward more Ability and Quest Augments, giving different champions more reasons to follow different paths. Developer update, patch 26.12 notes

The challenge has therefore moved beyond adding more augments to making the choices genuinely different. Ideally, players understand why they succeeded and can accept that even a losing game still leaves room to act. Making the game feel more out of control is easy; making people want to play many matches in a row is much harder.

Keeping an event mode means maintaining it

When patch 25.21 launched, Mayhem arrived as a separate queue, originally scheduled to run through 25.24, while regular ARAM remained available. Content continued to expand afterward: 26.3 added 45 new augments and progression content. By May 2026, the official developer update was discussing continued updates that year and plans for the following year. Patch 25.21 notes, patch 26.3 notes

That is enough to show a move from a short-term experiment toward long-term maintenance. The useful question is not merely whether it is “permanent,” but which costs the development team must keep paying: testing interactions between augments and champions, adjusting powerful combinations, managing the learning burden, and helping newcomers understand matches full of additional mechanics.

For streamers, patch changes supply fresh material. For players, too much change can become a burden. A lasting mode has to keep adjusting the balance between novelty and familiarity; ever more extravagant numbers cannot sustain it forever.

Public data do not tell us how many regular ARAM players remain

ARAMGG’s report for patch 26.16 covered 1,879,022 complete Mayhem matches, about 96.7% of them from public samples in mainland China. This shows that the site collected a substantial number of matches and that Mayhem exists beyond streamer demonstrations. ARAMGG statistical report

But a match is not a unique player: one person can participate repeatedly. The regional composition of a sample is not the distribution of players worldwide either. More importantly, the report does not provide a regular-ARAM total collected for the same regions, period, and methodology. It therefore cannot establish either mode’s share.

At the time discussed here, no comprehensive Riot dataset that can be checked in these sources answers how many people are playing regular ARAM in real time, or proves that Mayhem has overtaken it across all regions. Community estimates inferred from relationships with other modes are highly sensitive to their assumptions. They cannot fill this gap with an apparently precise percentage.

The continued availability of the regular queue is a verifiable product fact. How many of its players have shifted elsewhere requires another dataset. Visibility on streams cannot bridge the gap: a mode that is enjoyable to watch is not necessarily one every viewer wants to play, and it does not mean that people who prefer familiar rules have left.

Some want to discover a combination; others want a familiar match

The two modes offer pleasures that overlap but are not identical. Regular ARAM asks players to handle champions and team fights within relatively stable rules. Mayhem repeatedly invites them to change parts of how those rules interact and try a combination they have not seen before. The former does not need a flood of stream clips to establish its value; the latter cannot prove long-term retention simply by producing lively clips.

Mayhem is most interesting when a choice first becomes an expectation and then a testable result. If viewers can follow that process and players want to try it themselves, the content has a chance to lead people from the stream back into the game.

Whether the next update is worth playing depends on more than how many augments enter the pool. A more practical question is whether a match remains fun when you do not get the most popular combination.

$blog-writer Why was the design of League of Legends’ Hexabrawl mode able to become popular? It perfectly fits Douyin live streaming. League of Legends relaxed the copyright restrictions on Douyin a couple of years ago, and a large number of streamers poured in. At that time, there were some people streaming Brawl, but the streaming effects were not very good—the gameplay was fixed, playing the same champion a few times, and the audience experienced aesthetic fatigue. Hexabrawl is different; different combinations can produce various different effects. Initially, Riot wanted to make it an event mode, but now it has become a permanent mode. Here’s a question: are there still people playing regular Brawl? Are many people playing Hexabrawl?
